Yes, the Suzuki RG certainly has a glorious history – maybe even a soul. And it is fascinating to retrace its footsteps on the pages of this book from its beginnings up until 1980, the final year before the arrival of the Gamma version, which Marco Lucchinelli and Franco Uncini rode to win the world title in 1981 and 1982 respectively. The history of the RG is really seductive and one which has cast its spell over Massimo Cuffiani. Even though his day job is not to write books but to develop the styling of motorcycles that go into production, as the RG played a big part in his childhood, he has written this book as a declaration of his love for this bike and the entire world it represents. He has gone beyond any craftsman in his commitment, and passion, and in the meticulous attention paid to the technicalities, history, and detail. Cuffiani has truly put his entire soul into - or perhaps had it stolen by - the RG.

Interessantissima la parte squisitamente tecnica, in cui il percorso evolutivo della RG 500 è raccontato con la descrizione testuale e fotografica delle modifiche al motore e al telaio, ma anche con preziosi disegni tecnici, schemi e tabelle. L'autore propone poi 4 coinvolgenti interviste a Graziano Rossi, Virginio Ferrari, Marco Lucchinelli e Franco Uncini e in chiusura i risultati delle gare e la lista dei piloti iscritti al Motomondiale con la Suzuki RG 500 dal 1974 al 1983, specificando nei dettagli la versione, i punti ottenuti in campionato e addirittura i numeri di gara.

E' uscito un bel libro su una delle moto che ha fatto la storia dei GP in 500, la Suzuki RG. Lo ha scritto Massimo Cuffiani, che in realtà lavora sviluppando lo styling di moto che andranno in produzione: prima per il gruppo Cagiva, poi in Italjet, oggi in Engines Engineering. Imolese, designer e grafico, ha sempre avuto una gran passione per la moto, si può dire che sia cresciuto a piadina e corse di moto dalla 200 Miglia in avanti. “Quattro anni di lavoro - ci ha detto l’autore - da che è sbocciato l’amore per la RG 500”. ...Cuffiani racconta la famosa due tempi, quattro cilindri in quadrato, fin dall’esordio del 1974. La prima vittoria è dell’anno dopo. Per ogni stagione ci sono belle fotografie, le descrizioni tecniche dell’evoluzione, le interviste ai piloti e ai tecnici che le hanno sviluppate. La tecnica è descritta fino ai dettagli, attraverso le varie edizioni dei motori, dei telai, dell’aerodinamica; e per ogni pilota che con la RG è salito sul podio mondiale c’è una scheda completa: da Lansivuori ad Hartog, poi Sheene, Hennen, Middelburg, Mamola. In chiusura, belle le interviste inedite ai quattro piloti italiani che con la Suzuki RG 500 sono diventati grandi: Marco Lucchinelli, Franco Uncini, Virginio Ferrari, Graziano Rossi. Aneddoti, ricordi, gioie e amarezze.
